Do I Have To Paint My Ceilings White?

Living room in heritage house with white walls and green ceiling

There’s lots of great colours that can be used on a ceiling.

Is the ceiling in the above photo white?

If you said yes then I’m sorry, but you’re wrong.

The ceiling is exactly the same colour as the upper portion of the walls above the picture rail.

In the living room of this heritage house we chose Farrow & Ball, James White for the lower walls and Farrow & Ball, Green Ground for both the upper walls and the ceiling.

Using colour on a ceiling.

I frequently suggest to clients that they put a colour on the ceiling - often this suggestion is met with incredulity.

Are you sure?? The client will ask. Put a colour on the ceiling!!! - Yes.

Colours appear differently on a ceiling than they do on a wall because of the angle at which light is hitting it.

So, go ahead - if the colour is fairly light - put it on the ceiling.
